Hastings, Sussex, England, UK: Keres the Champion Has First Defeat. Paul Keres , the Soviet grand master, and S. Gligoric, the 34-year-old Jugoslav grand master, during their match today in the ninth and final round of the Premier Tournament at the Hastings International Chess Congress. The match resulted in Keres's first defeat, Gligoric winning in 57 moves in 6 3/4 hours' play. Keres had made certain of the premier championship overnight by his defeat of Olof Sterner, the 43-year-old Scandinavian champion, in the eighth round.
