Empire was an offshoot of punk legends Generation X, very influential for the ‘80s Washington D.C. hardcore and UK neo-psychedelic scenes, acting somehow as the missing link between new wave and grunge. “Expensive Sound” was originally released in 1981, their music was raw, bare, warm —distinct from the glacial, antiseptic pop that would dominate the decade. While “Expensive Sound” may be better known for the bands it inspired — the neo-psychedia of The Stone Roses and the athletic fretwork of Fugazi — they deserve appreciation on its own merits: one of the finest guitar pop records of the era. ------------------------------------------------ Empire fue un proyecto surgido de una escisión de las leyendas del punk Generation X, muy influyente para las escenas hardcore de Washington D.C. en los 80 y de neo-psicodelia británica, funcionando de alguna manera como el eslabón perdido entre la new wave y el grunge. “Expensive Sound” se publicó originalmente en 1981, su música era cruda, desnuda, cálida, distinta del pop glacial y antiséptico que dominaría esa década. Si bien “Expensive Sound” puede resultar más conocido por las bandas a las que inspiró, desde The Stone Roses a Fugazi, merece reconocimiento por sus méritos propios: uno de los mejores discos de pop guitarrero de la época.
